Why Rwanda Chose Aston Villa: The Billionaire Investor Behind the Visit Rwanda Partnership

Rwanda’s newest partnership with English Premier League club Aston Villa is more than a football sponsorship—it is the result of years of trusted relationships, strategic diplomacy, and shared investment interests.

The agreement, unveiled on Tuesday, marks a historic milestone for the Visit Rwanda brand. For the first time, a European football club will wear the Visit Rwanda logo prominently on the front of its match jerseys.

Previously, Arsenal displayed the brand on its sleeve, while Atlético Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain featured Visit Rwanda only on their training kits. Aston Villa’s deal therefore represents the most visible shirt sponsorship Rwanda has secured in European football.

According to officials familiar with the negotiations, such partnerships are never reached overnight.

“You don’t simply wake up one morning and sign an agreement like this,” one source told IGIHE. “When Visit Rwanda partnered with Arsenal, it was built on an already existing relationship between Rwanda and the club’s owners. The same principle applies here.”

A Longstanding Relationship with Rwanda

Janet Karemera, Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Convention Bureau (RCB), the institution now overseeing the Visit Rwanda brand, said Aston Villa’s leadership already has a deep understanding of Rwanda’s development vision.

Speaking to The Athletic, Karemera explained that club executives will soon visit Rwanda together with representatives from both the men’s and women’s teams.

“They know Rwanda very well,” she said. “One member of Aston Villa’s board has invested in Rwanda, so they understand the country’s ambitions and long-term vision.”

That board member is American billionaire Wesley “Wes” Edens.

The Billionaire Investor Who Knows Rwanda

With an estimated fortune of US$2.5 billion, Wes Edens is one of the principal investors behind Aston Villa.

He co-owns the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks and, together with Egyptian billionaire Nassef Sawiris, controls V Sports, the investment company that owns Aston Villa and also holds a 46 percent stake in Portuguese club Vitória S.C.

Edens is no stranger to Rwanda.

In 2021, he visited Kigali during the Basketball Africa League (BAL) season, where he watched games alongside President Paul Kagame at BK Arena.

His connection extends beyond sports.

Edens founded New Fortress Energy, an energy company that became an official BAL partner, using basketball to promote affordable, cleaner energy solutions across Africa.

As part of its environmental campaign, the company pledged to plant three trees for every three-point basket scored during BAL games, with a target of planting 100,000 trees.

Rwanda’s Leadership Impressed Him

During his 2021 visit, Edens described Rwanda as one of Africa’s most attractive investment destinations.

“Rwanda is a remarkable country,” he said. “Kigali is not only one of the cleanest cities in Africa, but one of the cleanest cities anywhere in the world.”

He attributed much of Rwanda’s transformation to strong leadership.

Drawing comparisons between Singapore and Jamaica in the 1960s, Edens noted that while both countries once had similar economic standing, Singapore surged ahead over the following decades largely because of effective governance.

He praised President Kagame’s leadership, saying Rwanda’s greatest resource is not minerals but its people.

“For a country with limited natural resources, its people have become its greatest asset. There is a clear vision and an unwavering determination to continue moving forward,” he said.

A Global Platform for Visit Rwanda

The partnership offers Rwanda unprecedented international exposure.

Aston Villa’s historic Villa Park stadium currently seats 42,640 fans, meaning the club’s 19 home Premier League matches alone can attract more than 810,000 spectators each season before accounting for domestic cup competitions and European fixtures.

The club is already expanding the stadium to increase capacity beyond 50,000 seats.

As part of the agreement, Rwandan coffee will be exclusively served at Villa Park, giving visitors a direct taste of one of Rwanda’s flagship exports.

Rwanda Convention Bureau (RCB) CEO Janet Karemera poses with Rwanda’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Johnston Busingye, and Aston Villa’s Chief Commercial Officer, Francesco Calvo.

The club’s growing popularity also offers enormous television exposure.

Aston Villa’s FA Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur during the 2025/26 season attracted 6.5 million viewers in the United Kingdom, while its Europa League final against Freiburg was watched by 3.5 million viewers on TNT Sports.

More significantly, Aston Villa competes in the English Premier League, the world’s most-watched football league, broadcasting to an estimated 1.87 billion viewers across 189 countries.

Although the club has not released total season-wide audience figures, these numbers underscore the enormous global platform the partnership provides—positioning Visit Rwanda before millions of football fans around the world while strengthening Rwanda’s image as a premier destination for tourism, investment, and business.
