“Shot Many Times, But He Survived” — Gen (Rtd) Ibingira Reflects on Lt Gen Kabandana’s Heroic Legacy

Family members, comrades-in-arms, and national leaders gathered on September 9, 2025, to honor the life and legacy of Lieutenant General Innocent Kabandana, a decorated soldier, liberation fighter, and mentor. He was celebrated not only for his role in liberating Rwanda and halting the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, but also for his post-war efforts in promoting unity and love among Rwandans.

🎖️ A Life Dedicated to Service

Born in 1968, Lt Gen Kabandana joined the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA) during its inception in 1990. He fought on the frontlines of the liberation war and the campaign to stop the genocide in 1994. He rose through the ranks due to his bravery, leadership, and relentless commitment to the mission.

During a tribute event, General (Rtd) Fred Ibingira, who served with Kabandana for over 35 years, described him as “one of the most courageous soldiers”—a man who was shot multiple times in combat but always survived.

“Kabandana was shot several times. Death should have claimed him on the battlefield, but he kept surviving. Where others fell, he stood,” said Gen (Rtd) Ibingira.

🔫 Battles Survived, Miracles Witnessed

One such brush with death came on December 21–22, 1990, at Nkanda in Kiyombe. Exhausted and starving, Kabandana’s unit was ambushed. He was wounded for the first time but recovered quickly. In 1991, during fierce battles in Ruhengeri, Cyanika, and Muremure, he fought as a young soldier full of strength and resolve.

In May 1991, Kabandana was among ten soldiers entrusted with heavy machine guns to help block a strategic route through the Virunga Mountains. That night, he reportedly confronted and overpowered elite soldiers, solidifying his fearsome reputation.

Another legendary moment occurred on May 18, 1991, during a surprise attack. Kabandana was among the few who emerged from ambushes firing, encouraging his fellow fighters to regroup and resist the enemy forces—despite being outnumbered and outgunned.

💥 The 1994 Genocide and Liberation Campaign

In 1994, Kabandana fought from Mutara to Butare, contributing directly to the defeat of genocidal forces. He became widely known for rescuing an infant during a mission in Karubamba—an image that became iconic on social media.

Later that year, near Ruhuha in Bugesera, he led a rescue mission in a Daihatsu vehicle, evacuating 12 survivors. Tragically, the vehicle hit a landmine—everyone aboard died, except Kabandana. He suffered burns but survived.

“Few survive what he did. He fought militant groups abroad, restored peace, and finally, after all this, was taken not by bullets, but by illness,” Gen (Rtd) Ibingira said solemnly.

💬 “He Will Never Be Forgotten”

Gen Ibingira emphasized that Kabandana leaves behind more than a legacy—he leaves behind a strengthened Rwanda, the RDF, and generations inspired by his courage.

“He gave his youth, energy, and life to this nation—without asking for pay or recognition. That is the true spirit of service,” he said.

🕊️ Spiritual Strength, Intellectual Wisdom

Lt Col (Rtd) Naramabuye, Kabandana’s brother-in-law, shared touching insights into the general’s spiritual and intellectual strengths. He recalled how Kabandana supported university students, survivors, and youth dealing with the trauma of genocide.

“He taught love, even to those whose families were perpetrators. He used his strength not for fame, but to heal, to unite, to uplift.”

Naramabuye described Kabandana as a man guided by three core forces: spiritual strength, intellectual power, and physical ability—adding that Kabandana built his life and legacy on the foundation of unconditional love.

🙏 A Call to the Youth

In closing, Naramabuye addressed Rwandan youth directly:

“Follow Lt Gen Kabandana’s example. Let love guide your work. In a world driven by profit and self-interest, his life showed us that true strength lies in unity, compassion, and service.”

He urged the youth to resist the cynicism of modern times and continue building a Rwanda rooted in dignity and mutual respect.

📌 Final Tribute

Lt Gen Innocent Kabandana’s life was defined by courage, sacrifice, and purpose. He fought for Rwanda’s liberation, stood up against evil, and nurtured a post-genocide generation with the message that love is the ultimate weapon.

“He did not fear truth. He did not serve his own interests. He served Rwanda. And that is why we believe he now rests in peace—close to God,” said Naramabuye.

Rest in peace , Lt Gen Innocent Kabandana. Your legacy lives on.
