Nyamasheke: Sgt Minani, Accused of Fatally Shooting Five People, Goes on Trial

The Military Court on Tuesday, December 3, began a public hearing of the trial involving Sergeant Minani Gervais, a member of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), who is accused of intentionally killing five people by shooting them.
The military prosecutor informed the court that Sgt Minani faces charges of premeditated murder, unauthorized killing, and intentionally concealing and tampering with a weapon.
The alleged crimes took place in Rushyarara, Karambi Sector, where the accused is also being tried.
The trial drew a large audience, including families of the deceased.
On November 13, RDF confirmed the arrest of Sgt Minani. In a statement, the military expressed deep regret over the incident:
“The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) is saddened by the tragic incident that occurred at a bar in Rusharara Cell, Karambi Sector, Nyamasheke District, where Sgt Minani Gervais, aged 39, is suspected of fatally shooting five people early on the morning of November 13, 2024.”
“RDF has arrested the suspect and is taking all necessary legal measures to prosecute him.”
The RDF also extended condolences to the bereaved families during this period of grief.
The shootings occurred around 1 a.m. following a dispute between Sgt Minani and the owner of the bar where he had been drinking.
