The Times Higher Education (THE) Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings 2024 have placed two Rwandan universities among the top 10 institutions in the region. The University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) ranked 4th, and the University of Rwanda came in 6th, highlighting Rwanda’s growing prominence in higher education.

The University of Johannesburg in South Africa claimed the top spot, overtaking the University of the Witwatersrand, which dropped to third place. The Vu University of Pretoria ranked second, ensuring South African institutions dominated the top three positions. Johannesburg was the only institution in the rankings to achieve an overall score above 80.

Rwandan universities performed particularly well in the “Africa impact” and “ethical leadership” pillars, which are among the five metrics used in the rankings. The updated methodology for 2024 emphasizes teaching quality, research contributions, student engagement, and equitable access to education.

Ghana also showed impressive gains, with the University of Ghana rising from 17th to 5th and Ashesi University maintaining its position at 9th. This brought Ghana’s total to two universities in the top 10, underscoring its commitment to ethical leadership and access to education.

Meanwhile, Kenyan institutions, despite having 15 universities ranked, missed the top 10. The University of Embu, the country’s highest-ranked institution, placed 16th. Nigeria remained the most-represented nation, with 41 universities ranked and 13 in the top 50. The American University of Nigeria led the country’s rankings at 12th.

Rwanda’s achievement demonstrates the strides its universities are making in quality education and equitable access, reflecting the nation’s dedication to fostering academic excellence in the region.
