The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) has announced new fuel pump prices that take effect from Saturday, September 6, 2025, and will remain in place for the next two months.
According to the new tariffs, one liter of petrol (gasoline) will cost Frw 1,862, up from Frw 1,803, while a liter of diesel will cost Frw 1,808, up from Frw 1,757.
In a statement issued on its official X (Twitter) account and signed by RURA’s Director General, Evariste Rugigana, the authority emphasized that the Government of Rwanda closely monitors international oil market trends and the broader economic situation to prevent sharp price hikes that could hurt citizens’ livelihoods.
RURA noted that without government intervention and regulation, fuel costs would rise much higher, with severe ripple effects on the cost of living. Fuel prices directly affect essential goods and services, including food, medicine, public and goods transport, house rent, clothing, and internet services.
Since Rwanda does not produce petroleum products and has no seaport, the country relies entirely on imports, mainly through the port of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, located 1,457 kilometers from Kigali. This process requires an average of two months for shipments to arrive, which explains why fuel prices are revised every 60 days.
The new tariffs are determined jointly by the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Infrastructure, and experts from RURA.
The government further reassured citizens that Rwanda maintains a strategic fuel reserve capable of covering the country’s needs for up to four months in case of supply disruptions.
Officials also clarified that without government subsidies, the pump prices of both petrol and diesel would be significantly higher than the current announced rates.
