Ruhango, Rwanda – August 26, 2025: A couple in Ruhango District is facing the possibility of a 10-year prison sentence after being found guilty of producing and trafficking Kanyanga, an illicit alcoholic drink banned in Rwanda.
Nyandwi Jean Damascène and his wife, Mukanyemera Donathile, appeared before the Intermediate Court of Muhanga in a public hearing held in Bweramana Sector, where they reside. The court proceedings drew significant community attention as the couple admitted to the charges and pleaded for forgiveness.
According to the Prosecution, the pair had been involved in the production and sale of Kanyanga for an extended period. They were arrested after authorities discovered 15 bottles of the substance, along with drums and other brewing equipment, hidden in their home. Investigations revealed that one of the three rooms in their house was designated exclusively for brewing.
Mukanyemera confessed during questioning that she was responsible for preparing the illicit alcohol, fully aware it was illegal. Witnesses confirmed seeing her engaged in brewing activities. Nyandwi, on the other hand, was arrested while returning with supplies allegedly intended for the production.
Prosecutors argued that despite repeated warnings from local authorities, the couple persisted with the practice. They requested the court to impose a 10-year prison term and a fine of Rwf 10 million on each defendant, with all seized materials to be destroyed.
In their defense, the couple pleaded for leniency. Mukanyemera sought forgiveness, while Nyandwi claimed his wife was the primary offender and appealed to be released so that he could care for their children, who are now left unattended.
The court has scheduled the final verdict for September 16, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.
