RDF killed three assailants and rescued civilians

Following Saturday’s attack in Kitabi Sector, the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) has pursued the assailants and killed three while the rest fled in Burundi. The RDF also rescued civilians who were missing after the attack.

RDF have assured the public of their security despite an attack on Saturday by unidentified assailants in Nyungwe Forest that claimed two lives and injured eight.

The attack was launched on three passenger vehicles which were all set on fire by the assailants.

The incident occurred in the evening at around 18:15pm in Cyitabi Sector of Nyamagabe District, according to a statement from RDF.

“The injured have been taken to Kigeme Hospital for treatment,” the statement signed by Lt Col Innocent Munyengango, the Defence and Military Spokesperson reads in part.

He added that the attackers fled into Nyungwe Forest and RDF is pursuing them.

“The RDF engaged and killed three of the fleeing assailants and the rest escaped into Burundi. We have also rescued all the civilians that the assailants attempted to abduct, some received counseling before being sent home.

We also recovered several items stolen from victims but many of them had been destroyed. Of the civilians injured in the Saturday attack and undergoing treatment, two have died from their injuries.”

The RDF reiterates that the road is clear, safe for all the traffic and the area secure.
